Welcome to Science
Science is the study of how the world around us, both living and non-living, is made and how it behaves.
As such, it is relevant to everybody and all students can find a topic within Science that engages them. Scientific ideas are regularly part of our daily news and having some understanding of the science behind them as well as how the data is presented is important in being able to make informed decisions about how we live our lives. As an academic subject, Science GCSEs are highly valued by colleges, universities and employers, demonstrating an ability to think critically, evaluate information and explain ideas clearly.

Key Stage 3
In Years 7 to 9 all pupils study a number of modules to underpin their understanding of Science. This includes the following areas
· Particles and solutions
The periodic table
Chemical Reactions
Earth chemistry
Acid Reactions
Cells, digestion and animal reproduction
Ecology and plants
Respiratory and circulatory systems
The immune System
Photosynthesis
Energy
Waves
Motion and space
Forces
Electricity and magnetism
This helps to build a strong foundation and equip them with the skills and information required for KS4.
Key Stage 4
There are two possible routes through Science at Key Stage 4. Students may choose to study for three GCSEs in Science, (known as Separate Sciences) and will have six lessons per week, or they may choose to study for two GCSEs in Combined Science, and will have four lessons per week.
The majority of students study separate Sciences at GCSE with our chosen examination board being AQA.
All GCSE courses cover content from the three scientific disciplines of Biology, Chemistry and Physics and are assessed by external examinations.

Extra Curricular Opportunities
There are a number of opportunities for students to get involved in extra curricular activities in the Science department, including:
Weekly STEM Club.
Weekly Gardening Club.
Science Week – Annual event which takes place every March and provides opportunities for enrichment within school, plus trips and/or visiting speakers.
Big Bang Science Fair.
