Food Preparation and Nutrition

Welcome to Food Preparation and Nutrition

In Food Preparation and Nutrition, we want our students to have a passion for the subject and to be able to prepare and create a variety of foods with independence and confidence.

The department has two spacious and well equipped food rooms and a food storage area. This subject provides excellent cross-curricular links with subjects such as Science and PE and can provide many exciting opportunities for further study.

Key Stage 3

All students in Years 7, 8 and 9 have Food and Nutrition lessons once a week for two terms, giving them the opportunity to gain experience both theoretically and practically in food related skills. The projects cover practical skills that link to theoretical topics within the new GCSE curriculum, helping provide an important general understanding for all, but also a base that can be built on for any students wishing to take the subject further.

The Food Ingredients Lists and Recipe Methods for KS3 can be found below:

Key Stage 4

At KS4, students have the opportunity to study AQA Food Preparation and Nutrition at GCSE or to study the WJEC Vocational Award in Hospitality and Catering. Details of the specifications for each of these courses can be found here:

Extra Curricular Opportunities

We think it is vital to provide students with extra-curricular opportunities where possible within the subject. Recently there have been Key Stage 4 trips to Bridgwater Catering College. We have had practical and theory food workshops delivered by The Royal Marines EAT (Education Awareness Team), Food Specialists from Supermarkets and outside guest speakers. We offer a variety of House competitions and pop up sessions and are keen to see students get involved where they can.
