English

Welcome to English

English provides our students with the ability to access the best of what has been said and written.

The English department has designed its Key Stage 3 curriculum to follow the principles of the National Curriculum as well as developing key literacy and oracy skills.

Students in all years have their skills regularly assessed in these three key areas: reading, writing and oral communication.

Our aim is to equip our students not just with the ‘English’ knowledge needed to succeed in their English Language and Literature GCSEs, but to provide them with the communication skills necessary to flourish in their further education and working lives.

At KS3, the department follows a programme designed to build students knowledge, skills, understanding and confidence in the subject.

Extra Curricular Opportunities

We actively encourage students to continue developing their love for literature, the English language and communication outside of school. In year 7, the 8B48 Reading Challenge motivates students to read eight books before they move into year 8. In year 8, students can join the Read to Succeed programme which inspires students to take on literary texts that have been carefully chosen by staff at Uffculme School. Years 7 & 8 also have their best work from the autumn term entered into a writing competition, the winners of which will be published in the newsletter.

In year 9, students are again encouraged to participate in the Reading Challenge and take part in the BBC Young Reporters programme. The 'Uffculme Star' magazine, run by Mrs Groves, also offers the chance for students to showcase their writing. Mr Winsor will be working with Exeter City Football Club to develop a pen pal programme between our students and people in Devon who may be suffering from loneliness or isolation.

Subject to Department for Education guidance in relation to extra-curricular clubs, we envisage running our ever-popular film and book clubs.

Out and About

The English department are committed to enriching students' cultural experiences. In recent years, we have been lucky enough to visit a plethora of theatres (both across the South West and in London) and see a wide variety of performances. We believe in the importance of students visiting the theatre and seeing their texts brought to life. We also seek to bring the world of literature to the school with live-streamed author events, (such as the Hay-on-Wye Festival), our annual Readathon, and visiting theatre performances.
